An alteration and addition to an early twentieth-century weatherboard cottage in the inner-north Melbourne suburb of Brunswick for a young couple. A new dining room and kitchen is added, as well as an ensuite and laundry. The addition is conceived as a garden room, at once within and looking onto the expansive backyard.

Contained within a simple, slightly distorted lean-to volume, the room is arranged around a central timber ‘bush pole’, defining areas for dining, sitting, and a kitchen partially tucked around a corner, all of which share a terracotta floor and lightly polished plaster walls and ceiling. The room is entered from a re-established ‘middle room’ within the volume of the existing house.
